As its name implies, Greene & Greene II is Portfolio’s second foray into the
Bungalow tradition practiced by the famous architect-brothers Greene & Greene.
“Just give us the Gamble House” asked our clients who had visited many of the
Pasadena residences designed by the Greenes. In fact, Greene & Greene II,
with its long and low profile, deep overhangs, and timbered terraces takes much
from the Greenes’ Pratt House, one of their five “ultimate bungalows”. The
Lodge at Crater Lake National Park in Oregon, another favorite of our clients,
was the Rocky Mountain inspiration for the rustic Arts & Crafts interior,
repeating the Lodge’s timbered ceiling and massive stone fireplace. A work-of-art
“suspended” winding stair beautifully unites the main living spaces with a
two-level loft and private guest suites above. The overall result is a masterful
blend of the Classic Arts & Crafts style of Greene & Greene with the National
“Parkitecture” of Crater Lake Lodge and the Estes Valley.
